The Title

Written by: admin

Is there anything in just a title?  We took a look at both the winning and losing titles of the last ten years and noticed the following:

The average number of characters in a winning title is 12.1
The average number of characters in a losing title is 9.6

Scientifically speaking, just using the number of letters in a title is not really enough to go by when predicting a winner, so we gave each letter in the title a numeric value (a=1, b=2… etc) to see if the total value of a title threw anything up.

The average numeric value of a winning title = 141.4
The average numeric value of a losing title = 115

What conclusions can we draw from this?

Two hot favourites to win are Turkey and Bosnia & Herzegovina:
Turkey’s entry “Düm Tek Tek” has 9 characters and a numeric value of 110
B&H’s entry “Bistra Voda” has ten characters and a numeric value of 111
This puts them very much in line with losing titles – more so than anyone else.

Norway too – favourites from the start – has a 9 character song and a numeric value of 97 which, while not cause for too much alarm, is going to be an interesting indicator.

It’s not all doom and gloom though on the maths front though. Middleweight outsider Romania’s entry “The Balkan Girls” has 14 characters and a numeric value of 139.  While Elena’s out on the number of characters by a not-insignificant margin, she has the closest numeric value to the winning average of any entry in this year’s competition.

Who’s best at predicting winners?
