Sanskrit Wednesday

In light of Rihanna’s recent tattoo debacle involving sanskrit, her hip and a dodgy translation, Hollywood ink artists are being urged to learn a bit of culture.

Rihanna’s newest tat is from Gita, a holy Hindu sanskrit text, that is meant to read “forgiveness, honesty, suppression and control”. Apparently the first part is misspelled, even though it was done by BangBang, a tattoo artist famed for being able to trace letters well.

Rajan Zed, Hindu statesman and President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, gave a speech in Nevada in April asking tattoo artists dealing with the ancient Sanskrit language to learn the meaning, culture and philosophy surrounding it. The language has become popular among Hollywood celebrities, and the statesman is concerned that people like Jessica Alba, Tommy Lee and Gillian Anderson don’t know enough about its origins.

Zed has offered to draft a basic curriculum to anyone who is interested.
