National Geographic had rather a good article on Groundhog Day last year.

“In 1887 a group of groundhog hunters from Punxsutawney dubbed themselves the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club and declared their furry oracle, Punxsutawney Phil, the one and only “official” weather-prognosticating groundhog. The Punxsutawney ceremony originated around the same time.

More than a hundred years later, Punxsutawney Phil remains the star of Groundhog Day, though rivals such as Staten Island Chuck and Gen Beauregard Lee maintain regional fame.”

That means we’ve gone a whole month without being able to watch this bundle of cuteness.

No wonder they say this is the best Monday of the year…

Alongside pictures of bug-eyed Republican pooches, The Pets With Newt 2012 site also features a comprehensive run-down of Newt’s favourite zoos of the almost 100 that he has visited (San Diego and Omaha are ones he particularly recommends). And before you think this is just another campaign trick, Newt’s obsession with animals dates back to the 1950s. Someone unearthed a press cutting from the Daily Boston Globe, 1954, which described the attempts of an 11 year-old Newton Gingrich to open his own zoo in a city park. Yet Newt will be dismayed to learn this is not enough to get the Popbitch endorsement. 55 years of dedication to animals and we haven’t managed to find one photograph of Newt with an otter. Come on, man – pull your finger out.

2011 belonged to Frankel. We barely know one end of a horse to another, but just watch him run, watch his stride. It’s so good, so perfect, it’s almost as if you are watching a cartoon horse. You just don’t get tens of thousands of people queuing to just get a glimpse of a horse normally. This fella has charisma.
