Happy John Snow day

June 16, 2010 – 4:00 pm -

No, not THAT Jon Snow

This John Snow.

He managed to rid Soho of cholera by finding the source – a dodgy water pump – and discovering how the disease was spread.

The water pump in question was on Broadwick Street, and now there is a pub named after him on the same street. So if you’re in the area, go for a pint. And if you’re not, you should go for a pint anyway in rememberance, as today in 1813, John Snow died.

p.s. John Snow also did some other really important stuff to do with biology or medicine or something, but we’re more interested in the pub bit.

Eurovision – the aftermath

May 31, 2010 – 1:51 pm -

So the strangely accented Kate-Nash alike from Germany walked it then. I just didn’t think she had the staying power to nip it, but good luck to her. That should stop the carping from the Eastern-conspiracy mob for at least another year. And a fornight in Berlin or Hamburg next spring sounds nice – although a nasty rumour is doing the rounds that it’s going to be in a pokey basketball hall in Hannover instead. Someone tell us that isn’t true.

But what of the UK? The lowest TV ratings in years and another bottom placing with a song the nation never really got behind. But we can’t blame poor Josh. He put up a sterling performance and was reassuringly philosophical about his lot when we saw him at the airport last night. He had a whale of a time, loved the experience and doesn’t blame anyone for his lot. Bless him.

But what did the grown-ups have to say about it all. We caught Pete Waterman and Graham Norton at the aftershow party for their views

Uncle Pete is forthright about our future in the contest…

While Mr Norton has an interesting suggestion for who we ought to send next year…
http://bambuser.com/channel/popbitch/broadcast/789948

Whatever we do, we really ought to send someone the whole country can get behind. An experienced act that would take the whole thing in their stride. Let’s do what the French do and send a major or interesting act, show the rest of Europe a thing or two about what we can do and damn the consequences. What the heck, let’s send Take That, Dizzee Rascal or Motorhead! It’s what the people want!

Popbitch Popquiz!

April 13, 2010 – 1:01 pm -

We weren’t quite sure what would happen with the Popbitch Popquiz this month after the incredibly unfortunate burning-down of our usual venue, The East Room, after the last quiz (we’re fairly certain it wasn’t out fault, but we’re now slightly worried we’re jinxed).

But the Popbitch Popquiz is back from the ashes and we’re going to be at The Player in Soho (Broadwick Street, W1F) tonight and tomorrow night with this month’s mix of music, trivia, gossip, drinking and – new this time round – sock-puppetry.

There’s incredibly limited space tonight (we’ve kept a few final seats free, but you’ll need to come down early and grab them up) but you can still book place for tomorrow’s quiz. It’s a fiver to play and you can stand to win all manner of amazing, weird and downright vile prizes.

Find all you need over at http://www.popbitchpopquiz.com

For those of you who knew him, we shall more than likely have a short memorial for our Tiger Shark mascot who sadly perished in the flames of the East Room (pictured here with “Woo!” Gary Davies).

Things That Make You Go Hmm

April 6, 2010 – 1:54 pm -

You’ll no doubt have a lot to catch up on after the four day weekend, so we don’t want to intrude too much. However, if you do find yourself with a few minutes’ leisure time for whatever reason, here’s some of what’s happening on the internet:

- Looks like the iPad is useful for something after all. Smoothies. [YouTube]

- In other-side-of-the-world news, a man is mauled in rare wombat attack [Stuff.co.nz]

- Unemployed? It’s your lucky day. Number 10′s recruiting [Guardian Jobs]

Times-warp

March 26, 2010 – 3:47 pm -

That Times article that is doing the rounds on the internet today – quite a few people are pointing out that it’s over a week old. How quickly people forget. Roger Boyes has been covering international child abuse stories for the Times for years. Years and years and years.

____________

From Popbitch issue 314 “Bad Horsey” - 24th August 2006

“The Times’ Brussels correspondent at the time of the Belgian paedophile scandal was called Roger Boyes.”
____________

(We bet the Times are kicking themselves that this little link didn’t spread like wildfire after the newly-announced paywall came into force. Get all your Roger Boyes-related kicks in now, because by June these sorts of chuckles will cost you a pound a pop…)
